What is Automatic Writing? How To Channel Spirit

Also known as Psychography or Spirit Writing, Automatic Writing is considered to be a form of channeling because It is a way to connect to your higher self, ancestors, angels and guides through writing. I’m not going to lie, the first time I did this, it completely freaked me the F out. I didn’t know what it was, I didn’t understand what was happening and I had no idea automatic writing was even a thing!

(Scroll to the bottom if you want to watch a video on this instead)

It’s possible to automatic write while on a computer, tablet or phone as well. Personally I prefer pen and paper but I have been able to automatic write while on my laptop or the notepad on my phone. That’s actually where some of my blog posts or Instagram / Facebook posts have come from.

Personally I think it’s much more obvious if you’re just starting out to establish when automatic writing is starting when you’re using pen and paper vs using technology. You’ll know Automatic writing is starting to happen when you start to feel a kind of surge of energy in your arm while writing. You may start to feel other sensations as well like heavy eyes, the need to change your position / posture or notice your writing change. If you’re clairaudient like I am then you may also start to hear the messages as they’re coming through as well.

The purpose of automatic writing

To get the answers and guidance you’re looking for from a higher power / source. This is your opportunity to LITERALLY have a chat with your angels and spirit guides about things that have been bothering you or weighing you down. Keep in mind depending on the question, they’re not always going to answer you. They’re not going to tell you the winning lottery numbers but they will tell you why you’re lacking in abundance and how to change that. It’s also possible that you’re asking questions that they’re not able to answer. This could be because you still haven’t learned a lesson, you need to experience it on your own, or because it’s in your best interest not to know the answer at this time. Annoying, I know.

It’s important to trust the messages you receive and not let your ego get in the way. If you need more clarity, ask for it, but don’t doubt it. It’s completely normal, especially in the beginning, to question everything and let your ego take over. If this happens, take some deep breaths and continue to go with the flow.

How to Activate Automatic Writing

How to get started with Automatic Writing

  1. Find a Space – Find a clear space (inside or outside). It’s pretty impossible to write anything at all (let alone Spirit Writing) if you’re distracted. Check out on of my previous posts about creating a sacred space for some ideas. Even if you weren’t automatic writing, it would be difficult to write anything good and stay focused if you were surrounded by distractions. A clear space can be anything that’s comfortable to you. You can be in your living room with some incense and candles or sitting in a park under a tree.

  2. Set The Mood – Play meditation or classical music in the background if you don’t find it distracting. Personally I like to scroll through YouTube until something catches my eye.

  3. Protect Yourself – For starters make sure you’ve grounded and centered yourself. Some people find it helpful to surround themselves with a white light before they start writing. You may find that doing this helps you connect much much quicker.

  4. Raise Your Vibe – Don’t forget that this is technically channeling so it’s important to protect your energy.  It’s probably not the best idea to attempt this if you’re feeling low vibe, and if you do give this a try then absolutely protect your energy. The last thing you want is something other than your angels or guides (a lower vibrational being) trying to come through when you’re feeling low. Don’t be afraid to tell your angels and guides not to allow anyone or anything to come through if they mean you harm, or to specify that they are the only beings you wish to chat with right now.

Don’t forget that this requires practice. It is an exercise that will get easier with time so don’t be discouraged if you’re having an off day or if you’re trying to connect and hearing crickets.
Have you ever done automatic writing? What was your experience? Or maybe you’re trying to get into it and are struggling a bit?  Let me know in the comments!
